Q: We have had an ECOsmarte system for 2 year. We continually need to keep the pH in the 6.2-6.4 range in order to get enough copper. We've also had an algae problem since shortly after the installation which, is eating up the non-chlorine shock at about 4 pounds every week to 10 days. Is there a safe algaecide we can try?

A: It sounds like you have phosphates in the pool and the filter. Get a local test from most pool stores to confirm this and if under 1000ppb purchase their non-toxic Zero Phos and follow the dose directions. If over 1000ppb I want you to call 1-800-ION-SWIM for directions on how, for under $25, to remove them. The pool should not use either non-chlorine shock or algaecide on a regular basis--the non-chlorine shock is a food source for algae and any Algaecide 40, 50, or 60 on the label should be your first course of action after the phosphates are removed or if the test shows zero. They bind up your copper and fertilize the algae coming in from soil, wind, and rain. An annual removal may be required.

Q: We have a couple customers on your system and one of them is having an issue. When they ionize once a month their pool turns green. All levels are good, but for whatever reason things just go green when they ionize. Any suggestions on what the customer needs to do, or what we need to do to help them would be greatly appreciated.

A: I would check the phosphate level in the pond. If over 1000ppb use aluminum sulfate, and if below 1000ppb use a zero phos non-toxic liquid such as Zero Phos. Also confirm the cell had its spring and post 4th of July cleaning in three to five parts water, one part acid.
